What is PAT Testing?

What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing is the term used to describe the process of testing all portable electrical appliances within a workplace. Most electrical appliances require a combined formal visual test and inspection every 12 months but can vary depending on usage. These tests determine whether or not the electrical appliances are safe for use.

What is a portable electrical appliance?

A portable electrical appliance is any electrical appliance that is moved when in use or can easily be moved from one place to another. An appliance of less than 18kg in mass that is intended to be moved whilst in operation or an appliance that can easily be moved from one place to another, e.g. vacuum cleaner, toaster, food mixer, etc.

How to start from a fresh?

This maybe the first time you are setting up a routine test on your electrical appliance. There is nothing to be concerned about as our engineers will do everything for you.

All you need to know is roughly how many items you have which require testing. Most electrical appliances require a combined formal visual test and inspection every 12 months but this can vary depending on usage.

We will produce you a quote using the quantity of items you have provided, however should there be more or less items we will amend the invoice you accordingly. Once the PAT Testing service is complete we will email you a full inventory of items tested along with a PAT Test certificate.

If you would like to discuss this with one of our team please call 0151 486 6760.

How much does PAT Testing cost?

We have a minimum call out fee of £75 for local jobs which includes the first 10 items, with prices starting from 75p each per additional item. We aim to offer the best possible service in Liverpool at a competitive price. Click here to read more about the cost of PAT Testing.

What do PAT Testing label look like?

PAT Testing labels are a way to identify that an item has been inspected. Each label will have a unique number to identify the item, the date and who carried out the test.

How can we be sure every appliance has been tested?

Our PAT Testing procedures ensure that tests are carried out on all equipment and that all equipment is unplugged and checked correctly before a full PAT Test is given. Each item will be label with a unique label and number.

How are items tested?

Our PAT Testers use the latest PAT Testing equipment on the market. All our engineers are issued with Seaward Apollo 500 and 600 testers. This offers a fast and reliable service to all our of customers.

What happens if an item fails PAT Testing?

Depending on the failure, the next course of action can vary; from our engineers repairing the item on-site, to the item being condemned.

How long will it take to PAT Test?

Depending on quantities and different work placement environments, PAT Testing can take anything from a few hours to a few weeks. For items within a normal office environment we aim to test between 150 and 200 items a day depending on location of items.

Can PAT Testing be conducted out of hours?

PAT Testing of electrical appliances during business hours may cause disruption in some but not all businesses. This is why we provide our PAT Testing service at any time of the day or night, 7 days a week.

If an out of office hours service is required, our team will deliver a quality service at a time convenient to you. We find with large offices and premises, an out of hours service is the best solution. This ensures your business has zero downtime if critical equipment needs turning off.

What happens once the testing is complete?

On completion you will be emailed a certificate and a detailed report of each item. The certificate acts as proof that the person responsible has taken steps necessary to ensure safety. The detailed report will highlight the pass or fails of each item. Click here to read more about our PAT Testing service.
