PAT Testing for Leisure Facilities and Gyms
Keeping your gym or leisure facility safe and compliant starts with proper electrical testing. At PAT Testing Liverpool, we offer tailored PAT testing services for fitness centres, gyms, health clubs, yoga studios, and other leisure spaces. We ensure your equipment is safe to use and legally compliant with current UK safety standards.

Electrical safety is often overlooked in busy gyms. Machines are used daily, cleaned often, and moved around. Over time, plugs wear out, cables become damaged, and faults can go unnoticed. A regular PAT test checks everything from treadmills and rowing machines to kettles in staff rooms and PCs at reception.

Our services are fast, local, and carried out with minimal disruption. We understand that many gyms operate outside the usual 9–5. That’s why we offer flexible appointment times, including early mornings and evenings, to fit around your business hours. Whether you run a single facility or manage a nationwide chain, we can help.

Why do gyms need PAT testing?

Gyms and leisure centres are high-use environments. From plugged-in vending machines to cardio equipment and cleaning tools, your site has many portable electrical items. Every one of these poses a risk if damaged or faulty.

UK law under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires employers to maintain safe electrical systems. This includes gyms and personal training studios. You are responsible for ensuring all appliances are safe to use. PAT testing is the simplest way to do this. It provides proof of testing, keeps your insurance valid, and protects users and staff.

Many insurers require proof of PAT testing. If an incident occurs and equipment hasn’t been tested, you could be held liable. Regular testing helps to avoid downtime, prevent injury, and meet legal responsibilities.

What equipment should be tested?

Almost every electrical item in your gym should be checked. This includes machines in the fitness area, equipment in treatment rooms, and appliances in break rooms or offices.

Treadmills, cross trainers, spin bikes, and rowing machines are common items that should be tested. Items like floor fans, televisions, chargers, and speakers also need checks. Even cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners and plug-in air fresheners should be included.

Reception areas often have PCs, printers, kettles, and phones. Don’t forget about small items like extension leads or desk lamps. These can pose just as much risk if damaged. We include everything in our inspection and log each item clearly.

How often should gym equipment be PAT tested?
There’s no fixed rule on how often testing should happen. Instead, it depends on the type of equipment, how often it’s used, and where it’s used. This is known as a risk-based approach, recommended by the Health and Safety Executive.

In general, equipment in gyms should be tested every 6–12 months. High-traffic machines like treadmills may require more frequent checks. Items used in wet or damp conditions, such as spa equipment, also need regular attention. We’ll help you set up a schedule that suits your site and meets HSE guidance.

We keep digital records of all tests. That way, you don’t need to worry about keeping track of dates. We’ll send reminders when items are due again.

What’s included in our service?
We carry out a full visual inspection of each item, checking for damaged plugs, frayed cables, or loose connections. We then use certified PAT testing equipment to carry out electrical tests, including:

-
Earth continuity (Class I items)
-
Insulation resistance
-
Functional checks
-
Lead polarity tests
-
Visual fuse and plug top inspection

Each item is labelled with a pass or fail sticker, including the test date and item number. You’ll receive a full digital report listing each item, its location, and test outcome. Failed items are highlighted for repair or removal.

We can test hundreds of items per day. Our team is experienced, DBS-checked, and fully insured. We work across Merseyside and Cheshire and cover both small independent gyms and national leisure chains.

What are the risks of not testing?

Ignoring electrical safety can have serious consequences. Faulty equipment can cause shocks, fires, or even death. You could face legal action, fines, or claims if someone is injured. It can also lead to reputational damage or business closure.

PAT testing is an affordable and simple way to show you’ve taken steps to manage risks. It’s part of a good health and safety policy. It keeps staff and customers safe, gives peace of mind, and shows you take your responsibilities seriously.

If your gym employs staff or allows the public to use equipment, you have a duty to ensure that all electrical items are safe. Don’t leave this to chance.
Are you a personal trainer or studio owner?

We also offer PAT testing for self-employed trainers, instructors, and studio owners. If you rent space in a gym or run your own studio, you may still be legally responsible for your equipment.

We test portable items like massage guns, speakers, laptops, lights, and plug-in fans. Our mobile service is ideal for people who work at multiple locations or take equipment to clients. We offer one-off visits or regular annual checks and provide digital reports for your records.
